Support for Reproductive Health and Gender Needs for Displaced Populations with Special Attention to Adolescents 2001-2005. Sierra Leone.
TEAM MEMBERS:
Marleen BosmansThe project was part of a multicountry programme for "Support for Reproductive Health and Gender Needs for Displaced Populations with Special Attention to Adolescents." It was a four-year programme (September 2000- August 2004) and supported by the Belgian development cooperation. It was implemented in seven different countries, including Sierra Leone, that are still affected by or emerging from war and armed conflict . The overall objective of this programme was to ensure that the reproductive health and gender issues were fully incorporated into humanitarian relief programmes and that the specific needs of displaced adolescents were met. ICRH was asked to do the final external evaluation of the project in Sierra Leone: "Empowering Vulnerable Women through Better Reproductive Health, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Reintegration Opportunities"
The overall aim of the project in Sierra Leone was to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS, prevent sexually transmitted infections (STI), alleviate poverty, enhance family planning and reduce the need for commercial sex work among adolescents and young girls. In order to reach this aim the following general objectives were identified: 1) to protect the sexual and reproductive health (SRH), including HIV/AIDS prevention, of destitute girls and young women (GYW) affected by the war; 2) to improve the safety of destitute GYW affected by the war; and 3) to enhance their potential contribution to the social and economic development of Sierra Leone.
