Royal visit for ICRH Belgium
Princess Astrid, member of the Belgian Royal family, honored the International Centre for Reproductive Health (ICRH) in Ghent with a visit on the 12th of November 2008. The occasion for this visit was the prestigious Belgian prize De Beys which was awarded to the ICRH in June 2008. The three-yearly De Beys prize is intended for Belgian institutes which do remarkable work in health research with a social dimension, prioritizing emergency and crisis situations. ICRH was chosen based on the file submitted presenting 25 actual projects in Belgium and abroad in the area of sexual and gender related violence. ICRH was granted 150.000 euro from the King Baudouin Foundation to support its current and future projects.Princess Astrid was welcomed at the office by a prestigious committee including the mayor of Ghent, the governor of East-Flanders, the vice-rector of the University of Ghent and the director of the King Baudouin Foundation. ICRH-director professor Marleen Temmerman guided the princess and explained the activities of the centre. Afterwards the princess attended a meeting where she was informed about the centre and its projects. Subsequently, the princess attended a session of the training course “Coordination of Multi-sectoral Response to Gender-based Violence in Humanitarian Settings”, organized by ICRH and UNFPA in Ghent from 3 to 14 November 2008. The visit ended with a reception and a photo exhibition of Sensoa and ICRH on teenage pregnancies.
