MOMI made it to the Burkinabè press, thanks to the opening ceremony which turned out to be a good strategic dissemination activity of IRSS!
The second MOMI consortium and project management meeting was hosted by IRSS in Ouagadougou from Tuesday 21 February until Friday 24 February 2012. Progress of the first MOMI project year and activities for the second year were discussed thoroughly and a field visit was paid to the study site in Kaya. Jaarlijks wordt meer dan de helft van het aantal nieuwe infecties met hiv in België vastgesteld bij mensen die niet de Belgische nationaliteit hebben. Eén op drie vrouwen die hier een abortus laat uitvoeren, verblijft nog geen vijf jaar in België. En het vermoeden dat migranten, en dan vooral mensen zonder een geldig verblijfstatuut, vaker het slachtoffer zijn van seksueel geweld, wordt helaas bevestigd door recent onderzoek van het International Center for Reproductive Health (ICRH).
Onthutsende cijfers, die de vraag oproepen: wat kunnen wij daaraan doen? Hoe kunnen wij de vele problemen aanpakken die kwetsbare migranten ervaren op het vlak van seksuele en reproductieve gezondheid? Sensoa, als Vlaams expertisecentrum voor seksuele gezondheid, wil zijn verantwoordelijkheid alvast niet ontlopen, maar het is duidelijk dat wij alleen die taak niet aankunnen. Samenwerking met alle intermediairs die rechtstreeks met kwetsbare migranten werken, is aangewezen. Hun kennis en ervaring is nodig om het tij te helpen keren.
ICRH Mozambique registered as a National Research Institute
On December 1, 2011, the Minister of Sciences and Technology of Mozambique officially recognized ICRH Mozambique as a National Research Institute, authorized to undertake scientific research activities on questions related to biomedicine and social sciences.

De realisatie van de milleniumdoelstellingen zaten en zitten nog steeds niet op schema. 2015-DE TIJD LOOPT wil de politici opnieuw wakker schudden met een actiemoment op 15 september. Female genital mutilation in Belgium: results of a study on prevalence and measures for the future
The Federal Public Service Health published the results of a statistical study with an estimation of the number of women with female genital mutilation and the number of girls at risk of being subjected to FGM, living in Belgium.

Now that the dust has begun the settle, the sounds of the last Vuvuzela to fade, and the flags and razz-mataz has quietened; now is the time to reflect on the experience in a way that makes us leverage the good, mitigate where necessary, and take lessons for the future.
So much of a successful event rests on sound planning, and sound planning relies on reliable data.
In the months leading up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, the media suggested that between 40 000 and 100 000 sex workers were needed for the projected half a million football fans who would travel to South Africa to join the soccer fiesta. A deluge of reports and campaigns convinced the public that a substantial number of women and children would be trafficked into host cities to meet the apparent increased demand for paid sex. A similar phenomenon was noted in the 2006 Soccer World Cup in Germany. This time, however, the hysteria was amplified by fears of an increase in the incidence of HIV, given that South Africa has amongst the highest prevalence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in the world. In many instances, trafficking was erroneously conflated with sex work, thus complicating efforts to address human rights violations against sex workers.
